BP has started paying claims as part of a settlement of the many cases filed against it over the Deep Water Horizon oil well leak in the Gulf of Mexico. I am writing this special blog post, because many people and businesses who are entitled to receive funds are not even aware that they can make a claim. Full disclosure: I help people make claims. If you want more information after reading this use the form at the side to contact me.
If during 2010 you lived or your business was located in any of the following places, and you meet some conditions, then you can make a claim. Here are the places:
- In any of the following counties in Texas–Galveston, Jefferson, Chambers, or Orange.
- Anywhere in Louisiana, Mississippi, or Alabama. And I mean ANYWHERE, even the most northern county or parish.
- In any county in the Florida panhandle (even if it is not directly on the coast) or any county along the Gulf coast of Florida down through the Keys.
Most people believe that they have to have been directly hurt by the oil spill in order to make a claim. But many people in the listed locations were hurt indirectly in their jobs or business because of the economic impact of the spill on the whole community. So you do NOT have to show you were directly hurt by the spill. What you do have to show is that you suffered a setback in your job or business during the time of the spill. How much of a downturn you have to show is according to a formula that depends on several things.
